Eligibility
My field is economics/accounting/marketing, am I eligible?
Yes. If you teach in the fields of business and management, including accounting, economics, entrepreneurship, events management, finance, human resources, international business, marketing or organisational strategy, you can apply for the CMBE. Please note that this is not an exhaustive list of specialisms, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us at cmbe@charteredabs.org if you have a question about making your application.
I teach business and management in higher education, but I’m not based in a business school. Am I eligible?
Yes. If you teach business and management subjects outside of a business school, you can still apply for the CMBE. So far, we’ve been delighted to welcome CMBE’s to the scheme from engineering departments, information technology departments, as well as those who are inter-departmental!
I’ve only been in my current role for a year, how to do I evidence that I’ve been teaching for longer?
You can do this in one of several ways:
- Ensure that your university of business school staff profile clearly states how long you have been educating, beyond just listing the amount of time you have been educating at your current institution.
- A letter or email provided by your institution (line manager, HR, Associate Dean, Dean/Head of School) that states that they are aware that you have been teaching for at least the minimum years required for CMBE eligibility (note: letters must be signed, on headed notepaper, and bear your official university or business school rubber stamp)
- A letter or email from your previous institution(s) as well as your current institution (note: letters must be signed, on headed notepaper, and bear your official university or business school rubber stamp).
I don’t have 3 years experience as an educator, so I am eligible to become an AMBE. How to do I progress to CMBE?
Once you have been educating for three years, you are eligible to progress to CMBE.
In your annual declaration you will be asked if you meet the criteria for CMBE. If so, you can submit evidence to us. Once your application has been approved you will become a CMBE.
Group subscriptions
How do I make a group subscription for a group of faculty members?
Institutions are using the CMBE to support their internal professional development framework and have subscribed multiple members of their faculty.
If you would like to discuss a group subscription for the CMBE, please get in touch with Michael Griffiths by email at michael.griffiths@charteredabs.org or phone on 020 7236 7678 and he would be happy to arrange this for you.
Evidence
How do I evidence my employment history teaching business and management for a CMBE application?
It is important that you provide us with the correct evidence when applying for your CMBE. Supplying unsuitable evidence will slow down your application, or even in some cases may result in your application being rejected. Please ensure you provide one of the following pieces of evidence:
We will accept:
- Your university or business school staff profile web page that clearly states you have been educating for at least the minimum years required for CMBE eligibility
- A scanned letter from your institution (HR, line manager, Associate Dean, Dean/Head of School as appropriate) (note: letters must be signed, on headed notepaper, and bear your official university or business school rubber stamp)
- An email from your institution (HR, line manager, Associate Dean, Dean/Head of School as appropriate) that can be uploaded in .msg or .eml formats
Please note that we do not accept CVs, LinkedIn profiles, letters that are not authenticated, or screen shots of emails.
If you’re applying for the AMBE, you will just need to provide evidence that you are currently an educator in a higher education institution.
What do I do if I can’t find a copy of my HEA certificate?
You can download a replacement PDF version of your HEA certificate from the Advance HE or HEA My Fellowship page.
Payment
The university where I teach has a business school which is a member of the Chartered ABS, but I teach in a different department. What price should I pay?
If you’re from a business school that is a Chartered ABS member, or an institution where the business school is a Chartered ABS member, you will pay the member rate for your CMBE or AMBE subscription, which is £100. Take a look at the Chartered ABS member directory to find out if you are from an institution within the Chartered ABS membership.
Individuals from non-Chartered ABS institutions pay £150.
Can I reclaim tax on my CMBE subscription?
No, you cannot claim tax-relief on your annual subscription.
