Development Programme for Directors of Research (DPDoR) 2018-2019

 

DPDoR is a professional development programme designed for those holding a Director of Research post, or those aspiring and working towards the position within their institution. DPDoR has successfully run for over a decade as part of a joint initiative between the Chartered Association of Business Schools (Chartered ABS) and the British Academy of Management (BAM).

Graeme Currie is Professor of Public Management & Pro-Dean Research Engagement & Impact at Warwick Business School. In the latter role, he endeavours to create an environment within which faculty can publish in the very leading business and management journals. He also encourages faculty to ensure their research addresses grand challenges faced by organizations and society. In so doing, he helps connect business school faculty with those in other university departments concerned with making such impact. Finally, he seeks to develop research capacity through the doctoral programme at Warwick, supporting early career researchers to progress to substantive faculty positions at Warwick or elsewhere.

On a personal level, his research mainly focuses upon healthcare organisation and management, supported by large scale grants from National Institute of Health Research (through their Health Services & Delivery Research and CLAHRC funding streams). He has published in extensively in leading business & management journals, such as Academy of Management Journal, Organization Studies, Journal of Management Studies, Human Relations. His work is interdisciplinary, encompassing publications in public administration journals, such as Public Administration Research Public Administration, and in health services journals, such as Social Science & Medicine. In a previous life before becoming an academic, Graeme worked in organization development for the NHS and Rover Car Manufacturing Group.

Programme themes

Session 1 – Developing a Research Strategy
The first session will explore the role of the Director of Research in the context of business schools and the differing ways one can develop a research strategy


Session 2 – Income, Students and Engagement
Once a research strategy has been developed, income is a key priority. Participants will explore the funding landscape and available income sources. The discussion will also focus on the varieties of doctoral programmes and approaches to engagement within research


Session 3 – Managing research performance and learning from others
This session will look at the lessons learnt from the REF and, using case studies, will assess how to manage research performance


Session 4 – Future Priorities: This session will look to the future of your role within business schools
In the post REF era what is next for the Director of Research? This session will also include opportunities to address the cohort’s interests and issues.

Participants on DPDoR, once accepted, are encouraged to discuss with their Dean or Head of Department their learning objectives and prospective actions for research strategy from the programme. Reflections upon this and discussion about realising prospective learning and actions will form a central component of the DPDoR.
