Diversity Workshop: Tackling inequality for BAME students and staff in business schools

Statistics show BAME students are less likely attain the highest degrees than their peers, and are also less likely to be appointed to highly skilled employment.

Universities have made similarly little progress in appointing BAME staff to senior positions. This workshop will explore and examine how these inequalities might be addressed by business schools.

Detailed analysis of national initiatives to improve the representation, progression and attainment of BAME students and staff will be an important feature of the day. Business school case studies of actions being taken to tackle BAME inequality will also feature heavily.

Speakers will include:

  • Kirsty Johnson, Higher Education Policy Adviser, Access & Participation Funding & Programmes, Office for Students
  • Donna Whitehead, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean, Bristol Business School, University of the West of England
  • Zainab Khan, Director of UWE's Equity Programme, University of the West of England
  • Nathan Ghann, Student Success Lead, Hertfordshire Business School
  • Ash Talwar, Equality Diversity and Inclusion Manager, University College London
  • Representative, Race Equality Charter Team, Equality Challenge Unit

This workshop will be particularly useful for staff with the following responsibilities and interests:

  • Institutional commitment to achieving/maintaining ECU’s Race Equality Charter;
  • Widening participation for BME students;
  • Improving attainment for BME students (also a factor in TEF);
  • Improving equality of opportunity for BME staff, including at senior levels in the institution;
  • Overall responsibility for/interest in improving diversity in the business school.

This diversity workshop is a must for:

  • Business school staff with responsibility for or an interest in equality and diversity
  • Associate Deans and Heads of Learning and Teaching
