This year's Executive Education Leadership Programme is sold out. To express your interest for the 2025 cohort, please contact enquiries@charteredabs.org.

Overview

The Executive Education Leadership Programme (EELP) 2024 is designed for new, and aspiring, Directors of Executive Education or those with similar commercial responsibilities for short programme provision at UK business schools.

Facilitated by Steve Ludlow (formerly Head of Executive Education, Henley Business School) EELP 2024 is a multi-dimensional development programme. Over 6 months, participants will develop the knowledge, skills and networks necessary to develop their institution's strategy for short course provision and lead successful executive education teams.

The programme takes place over four modules and includes visits to two Chartered ABS member schools, to provide 'live case studies' of how executive education is delivered in a higher education setting. All sessions will consist of interactive presentations from experienced executive education professionals, lively discussions and engaging group activities. Throughout the programme, participants are encouraged to share their challenges and support colleagues, and at the close of the first day of each module, there will be a dinner enabling informal networking and cohort building. The final learning activity of the programme is a simulation of a client Invitation to Tender (ITT) during which participants will compete to win the work.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the programme participants will have:

  • Developed or reviewed the strategy, marketing plans and business model for their executive education function
  • Gained a deeper understanding of best practice and opportunities for innovation in creating and delivering executive education
  • Improved their understanding of what it takes to manage clients and delivery partners, and influence internal stakeholders
  • Reflected on their own development needs as change leaders
  • Joined a network of executive education leaders

"An excellent opportunity to meet other executive education leaders and be informed and inspired by practice elsewhere"

Professor Sarah Hurlow, Professor of Leadership Learning & Director of Executive Education, Cardiff Business School

I am Professor of Leadership Learning. My scholarship, teaching and consultancy focus on different approaches to facilitating leadership and team development.  This includes critical, relational and collective perspectives.

I am particularly interested in the theory and practice of coaching. I set up a team of coaches to support the professional development of participants on the Business School’s accredited professional programmes. I also provide individual and team coaching and run workshops to build coaching skills. Current coaching research projects include:

  • The role of coaching on formal accredited programmes
  • Identity coaching
  • Finding meaning in work by identifying 'impact'.

In January 2023, I became Director of Executive Education in the Cardiff Business School.  This is an important vehicle for the School’s engagement with the post-experience community. It embraces credit bearing programmes (MBA full and part-time, MSc in Public Leadership and the Diploma in Health Care Planning), tailor-made development solutions for clients and a range of learning opportunities for individuals in the workplace and local community.

I have scoped, developed and facilitated numerous leadership and management programmes for a range of private and public sector organisations, as well as international clients. I have also led a range of organisational behaviour modules at undergraduate and postgraduate level.  Most recently, I developed and delivered the Leadership Development Programme that underpins the Business School’s flagship MBA.

I have held several leadership roles including Director of Postgraduate Taught Programmes at Cardiff University where I was responsible for refreshing the Business School’s postgraduate portfolio and contributed to securing AMBA accreditation. The collaborative approach underpinning this work was recognized in a Cardiff University Celebrating Excellence Award for ‘Exceptional Enhancement of the Student Learning Experience’ in 2019. I served as Director of the Executive MBA and was a member of the School’s Shadow Management Board. I was also a member of the Steering Group for Academic Engagement that formed part of the University’s Education Portfolio for Change.

My first degree in English Literature was from the University of London (Goldsmiths College). I gained a PGCE (FE) from Cardiff University, along with her PhD for which I won a best doctoral dissertation award from the Academy of Management. I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA). I served as an elected member of the Council of the British Academy of Management (BAM), with a particular focus on the Management Knowledge and Education (MKE) portfolio and am currently a member of the BAM Special Interest Group on Post-Experience Education.

"EELP covered interesting and relevant modules and has helped to create a solid foundation for the continued growth of our executive education activity. The networking opportunity has been fantastic; I feel very lucky to have created connections with wonderful people that will continue as both the programmes we take forward and our careers progress."

Sarah Langmaid, Impact Partnership and Development Manager – Responsible Business, University of Exeter (EELP 2023 cohort)

“An excellent opportunity to network and collaborate with Executive Education colleagues from across the CABS network, discuss common areas and challenges, and find ways to work together more effectively and for mutual gain in an increasingly competitive L&D sector.”

Sandra Stirling, Head of Executive Education Delivery, University of Edinburgh Business School (EELP 2023 cohort)

"I thoroughly enjoyed the CABS Executive Education Leadership Programme and would recommend it.  The learning was both informative and practical in nature, so much so that I was able take ideas back into the workplace helping me in my role and also drive executive education strategy.

Importantly, the course gave me the opportunity to network and share ideas with colleagues from across the UK who are in similar roles, this was very helpful to benchmark and see how different organisations approach executive education."

Nick Read, Business Development Manager, Ulster University Business School (EELP 2023 cohort)

"A fantastic exploration of executive education activity and what might work well in different settings. I come away with lots of ideas and actions"

Dr Ed Thompson, Associate Professor, Leicester Castle Business School (EELP 2022 cohort)

“Really worthwhile to help realise the executive education strategy for my business school”

Gillian Saieva, Director of Executive Education, Southampton Business School (EELP 2022 cohort)

"The EELP has created a safe space to explore the strategic challenges and opportunities from expanding our executive education activity. Having support in a collegiate way, with organisations who might otherwise feel like competitors was a wonderful reminder that we have much more in common than divides us"

Jenny Britton, Head of Executive Development, University of Edinburgh Business School (EELP 2022 cohort)
