Executive Education Symposium
The future is now: Redefining executive education for turbulent times
25 November, University of Strathclyde
The Autumn Executive Education Symposium is an opportunity for Directors of Executive Education and senior corporate engagement, enterprise and executive education staff to reflect on the changing dynamics of the markets, communities and organisations which executive education providers seek to serve; and on how to tackle the internal pressures facing business schools.
The Symposium will reflect on what is meant by ‘Executive Education’ in today’s rapidly evolving world of work and against an uncertain economic and geopolitical backdrop. Specifically we will explore how the demand for, and provision of, open-enrolment and custom executive education programmes is being shaped by the UK’s gloomy economic outlook; by post-pandemic ways of working; by new business priorities around sustainability and responsibility; by the rise of inexpensive and free online badged learning; and the challenging geopolitical environment in which we operate.
The Symposium is the opportunity for Directors and managers of executive education teams in UK business schools to share with their peers the things that are ‘keeping them awake at night’; and discuss what business schools need to do to if they are to continue to provide relevant and meaningful development experiences and lifelong learning to post-experience education communities.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the Symposium participants will have:
- A greater awareness of the continuing challenges facing executive education providers; in particular around the turbulent geopolitical environment and the uncertain economic landscape.
- New perspectives about the key demographics and characteristics of ‘executive education’ clients and the extent to which current business models and pedagogies need to evolve to remain meaningful.
- Fresh insights into the ways in which business school executive education teams are generating income for their institutions; and collaborating with other parts of their universities (in particular with enterprise and innovations teams).
- New ideas about how executive education providers can capitalise on pandemic-induced changes to our ways of working; in particular around the blend of in-person and online interactions.
- New ideas about how executive education leaders can recruit, develop retain and motivate their own teams.

What is Executive Education? Exploring definitions and models
In this session we will explore the different definitions of, and models for, executive education. We will consider whether executive education should be a limitless, expansive field or more tightly defined; and the extent to which executive education is bounded by organisational structure, hierarchy, and funding constraints. Participants will be challenged to think about where they and their school sits within the current parameters of executive education.

What does the market need from us? The client perspective
In this session we will explore what clients want and need from the executive education provider community. We will explore the various ways in which clients interpret the term executive education and the shape of the broader learning & development landscape within which executive education sits.
The session will be initiated by a guest address from Riaz Shah, a partner at Ernst & Young, who helped create the Hult EY Tech MBA, an innovative collaboration between a school and a professional services firm to deliver badged and accredited professional development for EY employees.
