Safeguarding and developing opportunities for UK business schools

Wednesday 1 May, London Institute of Banking and Finance

Safeguard and develop student recruitment and other interests in China

The latest in our Focus On series, this workshop will be an ideal opportunity for business school staff to explore how to protect and build on existing interests in China, especially for those responsible for international strategy and student recruitment.

For many UK business schools China is already an established and valuable market, but one which is constantly changing. This workshop will examine trends such as the increasing attractiveness and prestige of business schools within China and worldwide, and how these can be incorporated into business schools' international strategies.

This workshop will include:

  • Presentations from the British Council and the China-Britain Business Council to provide the latest information on maintaining student recruitment and business partnerships
  • Case studies from business schools on their work in China
  • Discussion on predicted trends and developments in the Chinese market
  • Opportunities to network and share common problems and best practice

This event is kindly sponsored by the Confucius Institute at the University of Southampton. More information about the Institute can be found below.

Confirmed sessions and speakers include:

Student recruitment and partnership opportunities in China

This session will provide an overview of current student recruitment and partnership trends in China, examine current opportunities in the market and explore how to develop a strategy to remain competitive and successful in China.

Fraser Deas, Head of Education Services (China), International Education Services, British Council

Setting up a programme partnership and the next stage in expanding collaborative provision

Operating in China for the expansion (or indeed the protection) of their presence in the international markets is a must for many business schools. This session will focus on the lessons learned from a decade and a half long joint venture between a UK business school and a Chinese university. Despite the obvious veil of commercial confidentiality covering most details of the operations, participants will be able to discuss general lessons drawn from this experience.

Professor Marco Mongiello Associate Dean (International), Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Surrey

China – policies and drivers – impact on higher education

This session will provide an overview of China’s major economic policies and how these feed into China’s education strategy. It will then look at the opportunities and challenges that they present for the UK Higher Education sector. The session will also look at some key aspects of operating in China.

Nathalie Cachet-Gaujard, UK Director – Education and Innovation, China-Britain Business Council

Trends and future development of the Chinese market for student recruitment

This presentation will provide a comprehensive investigation of the potential decline in Chinese student recruitment. The discussion is supported by statistical evidence that the Chinese students become more selective as for the choice of HEIs in the UK, and will examine a number of factors.

Professor Roman Matousek, Director, Global Centre for Banking and Financial Innovation, Nottingham University Business School

Strategies for setting up and developing a partnership relationship with a Chinese university

This presentation will outline alternative routes into a partner relationship and strategies for determining where to start and how to develop the partnership. Using a case study example from an existing Newcastle University Business School partner, it will highlight factors to be considered, key challenges, pitfalls, and success factors, which should be of use for those considering setting up their own agreements.

Dr Josie McLaren, Accounting and Finance Subject Group Head, Newcastle University Business School

Setting up a programme partnership and the next stage in expanding collaborative provision

This session will also focus on understanding the journey for creating a successful ongoing relationship with a Chinese university, from initial interest through to Ministry of Education application for a programme level partnership, taking on internal and external considerations. It will also investigate how to successfully expand the relationship into a Collaborative Educational Institute.

The University of Southampton Confucius Institute (CI) was formally opened in October 2011 in collaboration with their Chinese partners at Xiamen University, P.R. China. Since that date they have been working on a series of workshops and events to raise the profile of the Confucius Institute at the University and amongst their local community in Southampton.

Their long-term aim is to establish and support the provision of opportunities to study of all aspects of modern China, including language and culture, from primary school through to University level. To this end they intend to develop a portfolio of MSc and BSc courses combining the study of language with aspects of Chinese economy and society.

When it comes to studying Mandarin Chinese it is understood that learning from an early stage can be of significant benefit, and as such the Institute is working hard to include local primary schools in their network of Chinese language learners. They deliver courses in Chinese language and culture for the wider community through the University’s Lifelong Learning Programme and provide a range of services for local entrepreneurs looking to enter the Chinese market.
