Explore our interactive research income data dashboards

8th January 2025

The Chartered ABS are delighted to publish data on the research income of individual business schools within a new interactive dashboard tool. The dashboards give users the ability to filter, benchmark and analyse 10 years of Business & Management research income across 126 UK institutions. The dashboards are based on data from the HESA Finance Record and enable users to:

  • Benchmark an institution’s performance against a peer group of their choice by filtering according to institution mission group, region, or incorporation type

  • Explore changes in the amounts and share of total funding received collectively by each mission group between 2017/18 and 2022/23

  • Identify trends in the Business & Management research income received by 126 institutions over the past decade

  • Download the data for further benchmarking and analysis at the user’s discretion

The dashboards are free to users who are registered for our website, including those registered for the AJG and the CMBE. We plan to produce more dashboards in future.

Chartered ABS analysis from the dashboards:

  • Over the past decade, research income in Business & Management has been shared almost equally between Russell Group and non-affiliated schools. In 2022/23, both groups held 46% each of total funding.

  • The total Business & Management research income received by Russell Group and non-Russell Group schools reveals a similar trend but since 2017/18 the funding gap between the two groups has become narrower.

  • Four of the five highest earning schools in research income from 2012/13 to 2022/23 belong to the Russell Group. The University of the West of England, Bristol, reported the highest research income among University Alliance schools, with £13.2m during this period. For MillionPlus schools, the University of Wolverhampton recorded the highest income, totalling £3.9m.

  • There is significant diversity in the income received by institutions in the different mission groups with a few schools receiving considerably more funding than others in the same mission group.
