The Chartered ABS has published the second edition of its interactive research income dashboards for Business & Management. The dashboards give Chartered ABS member schools the capability to filter, benchmark and analyse 10 years of research income data individually for 127 institutions. This year’s set includes a comprehensive dashboard displaying data on the funding received from every single funding source individually over the last 10 years.
This year we have also included a set of dashboards for research income within Economics and Econometrics, in recognition that much Economics research is carried out within a business school.
The dashboards are based on data from the HESA Finance Record and enable users to:
Benchmark an institution’s performance against a peer group of their choice by filtering according to institution mission group, region, or incorporation type
Compare the income received by an institution against the average received by institutions in the same mission group
Explore changes in the amounts and share of total funding received collectively by each mission group between 2018/19 and 2023/24
Identify trends in the Business & Management research income received by 127 institutions over the past decade across all funding sources
Download the data for further benchmarking and analysis at the user’s discretion
The dashboards are free to users who are registered for our website, including those registered for the AJG and the CMBE.

Chartered ABS analysis from the Business & Management dashboards:
In 2023/24, funding received by the Russell Group increased to 48% of the total for Business & management, up from 46% last year.
At the same time, the share received by the non-affiliated institutions fell from 44% to 42%, while the shares received by the Million Plus and University Alliance groups of institutions were unchanged.
Four of the five highest earning school in research income from 2013/14 to 2023/24 belong to the Russell Group. The University of the West of England, Bristol, reported the highest research income among University Alliance institutions, with £13.3m during this period. For MillionPlus institutions, the University of Wolverhampton recorded the highest income, totalling £3.9m.
There is significant disparity in the income received by institutions in the various mission groups with a few schools receiving considerably more funding than others. Research income is comparatively small for many non-affiliated institutions, with 29 institutions receiving less than £1m in funding over the last five years.
