About this programme
The Academic Leadership and Management Programme (ALMP) supports the development of academics who are currently undertaking, or preparing to undertake, mid-level leadership and management roles within UK business schools.
ALMP focuses on the practical realities of leading academic teams and managing strategic responsibilities in complex and resource-constrained environments.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the programme, participants will be able to:
Understand the changing environment in which business schools operate and critically consider the strategic role of Heads of Department and other academic leaders in shaping their institution's response.
Lead people and teams effectively through uncertainty and change, building trust, listening well, supporting colleagues and balancing empathy, fairness and psychological safety with accountability.
Diagnose complex organisational challenges and translate institutional strategy into clear priorities and informed strategic choices within their own area of responsibility.
Make informed decisions about budgets, resources and priorities, recognising financial constraints, opportunity costs and the implications of resource decisions for people, academic quality and future capability.
Influence effectively across and beyond the business school, including working with stakeholders, building coalitions, managing upwards, constructively challenging assumptions and presenting credible, evidence-informed recommendations.
Apply their learning to a live leadership challenge, using reflection, feedback and peer challenge to develop a practical leadership experiment and 90-day action plan for their own context.
