From Idea to Impact: Winning Major National and EU Grants (£1M+)

This reflective seminar explores how to design, position, and secure large-scale, high-impact research funding from national and European Union (EU) sources. Focusing on ambitious proposals exceeding £1 million, the panel members will share their experiences and lessons learned from both successful and unsuccessful grant journeys, highlighting what it takes to transform innovative ideas into strategically compelling, fundable projects.

Participants will gain valuable insights into identifying major funding opportunities, building interdisciplinary collaborations, articulating societal and academic impact, aligning with funder priorities, and strengthening applications for highly competitive funding environments.

This event is particularly relevant for those considering the development of transformative research proposals for major UK or EU funding calls.

This Research community meeting is organised by the Chartered ABS' Research Committee. It is open to all members of the Chartered ABS and is free of charge.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the programme participants will:

  • Recognise common pitfalls in major grant applications and get practical tips on how to improve proposal success rates

  • Have perspective on best practices in budgeting, consortium building, and project design

  • Gain ideas on how to better position interdisciplinary, international and high-value funding calls

  • Opportunities for networking and potential research collaborations

As a result of attending this event participants will:

  • Understand key evaluation criteria and how large proposals are assessed

  • Align research ideas with strategic funding priorities and policy frameworks, and impact expectations

  • Develop a stronger, more competitive grant application

  • Navigate the complex funding landscape with greater confidence and strategic clarity and insight
