The Chartered Association of Business Schools has published a 'Transnational Research Policy Statement' to provide members with guidance and common principles for designing and managing transnational research partnerships that are strategic, ethical, high quality, and built on trust.
The policy statement was presented during the India-UK Business School Dialogue in New Delhi, a forum to build long-term, sustainable partnerships between UK and Indian business schools.
Transnational Research (TNR) refers to institutionally governed cross-border research partnerships and platforms with shared objectives and explicit arrangements for governance, ethics and integrity, data and intellectual property, risk management, and impact.
The statement outlines key guiding principles to support member TNR activities:
The Chartered ABS encourages TNR shaped by clear institutional intent, ownership, and accountability, supported by governance that clarifies decision rights and escalation routes.
The Chartered ABS recommends that members build partnerships on reciprocity and equity, with shared agenda setting, transparent resourcing, and fair recognition of contributions.
The Chartered ABS encourages members to maintain research integrity and ethical practice across differing legal and cultural contexts, with robust and consistent ethics review and safeguarding arrangements.
The Chartered ABS supports the use of risk-based, proportionate safeguards to protect people, knowledge, data, and infrastructure.
The Chartered ABS advocates for data governance and cyber resilience to be designed into partnerships from the outset, with clear terms on ownership, access, and cross-border transfers.
The Chartered ABS recommends that partnership agreements clearly set out intellectual property arrangements, publication rights, confidentiality, and dispute resolution.
The Chartered ABS encourages responsible dissemination and open research practices that increase societal value, while recognising that some contexts require careful communication of sensitive findings.
The Chartered ABS supports responsible research assessment that recognises contribution diversity and partnership stewardship alongside outputs and impact.
These principles are design to support UK business schools in building transnational research partnerships that are strategic, trusted, and sustainable.
The statement was drafted by The Chartered ABS International Committee and Research Committee, with guidance from the Policy Committee.
The Chartered ABS has also published a policy statement on Transnational Education to provide guidance to members on how to build long-term, mutually beneficial, and sustainable partnerships.
